What does this actually do? ( www.hide-my-ip-address.com/hideip/ )

Yes the IP is a number that identifies my computer but I can get the IP to change by unplugging my modem overnight and poof there's a different one.

Is there really such a thing as total anonymity? Wouldn't I need my own main network server and a ghosted satellite link-up to have a real anonymous internet presence?

I think you have right. All such sites din't really give you anything. Of you need something real you need to have an own Linux set up as a server and a couple of friends with similar servers, all anonymous, then you build a chain of the servers and go through this chain. Without such circumstances it's gonna be hard to have a real anonymity. On the other hand, at least _some_ sites which offer you "anonimity" are property of somebody who uses them to collect all data of people who go through these sites.

Well, maybe it would be useful for users of RapidShare... if it would give you every time another IP - and I'm sure it doesn't.
