Good Morning,
I recently got all my equipment for my new rig and put it together last night.
Last night I:
1. Installed my old IDE drive from my old comp into the new comp.
2. Installed my new, empty SATA drive
3. Installed one of my old DVD drives into the new rig so I can load discs that came with the different components of the new system.
Result:
1. Started the comp up, got a message that said my CPU config had changed and went to set-up.
2. Tried to change BIOS settings to accommodate new setup.
3. FAILED - Comp eventually would power off before I could even get into the BIOS each time I cranked her up.
Concerns:
1. Is the old IDE hardrive and the OS on it "locked" to the old cpu and MOBO?
2. New MOBO has only one IDE slot (I'm used to one for CD and one for HDs) I have the old IDE HD on the same IDE cable as the DVD player. Is this bad form?
3. Am I screwed?
Anybody have any tips on this?
I am planning on flashing the BIOS when I get home to (hopefully) stop the restarting issue so I can get things straight in the BIOS.
Attempted to boot from the old IDE drive in order to ghost to the new one using Seagate's utilities.

Re: OS Transfer Problems
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 8:15 AMdid you ever get this machine working?
One time I was able to "reuse" a hard drive with the OS (and all my docs too!) still on it, but the new MOBO and CPU were similar (same brands, MSI and AMD). I remember having to clear the CMOS (a few times actually, it kept powering down itself) and after several attempts at restarts the machine finally made it to Windows. I think I then loaded the new MOBO utilities and was able to smooth the system out. It took some time though, and the machine had to work some kinks out on its own. I'm no pro, but it was a good experiment and it worked!
I've never flashed bios, did it work? -

Re: OS Transfer Problems
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 11:45 AMI got it working, but went an entirely different tact.
I just installed a fresh install of a b0rrowed c0py of w1nd0ws and then installed the upgrade over it. Did some file and setting transfer and was fine.
The restarting I was encountering was that my CPU heatsink wasn't seated properly and after reseating, it ran fine.
Really enjoying the speed I've got now. Been playing Oblivion on the next-to-highest settings and still have a great framerate. I haven't done the highest quality settings yet.. hmm.. maybe this evening.
Bios flashing is easy and pretty effective in giving you a clean slate to start from. Most modern MOBOs come with a Flash Utility in the BIOS itself, but the tried and true method is to remove the CR2025 battery from the motherboard and wait about 5 minutes and then put it back in.
My wife's computer was an HP that I bought a new MOBO and CPU for and utilized the same HDD and OS. I ran into some issues that eventually were solved by an OS upgrade.

Re: OS Transfer Problems
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 3:46 PMI have found that MS XP is very finicky about hardware. I can't just swap it around. I gotta delete the OS directory and reinstall or F-Disk format and reinstall.
98 was more forgiving.
